So I just got back from Cairns, up north in Queensland near the Great Barrier Reef. I wanted to do a reef tour and a rain forest tour, but I only had the one full day, so snorkeling was it. But what a day it was. My grandmother reportedly always used to say, in referring to blue Gatorade or Jello, that you shouldn't be eating things with colors not found in nature. Well, truth is, I saw at least one fish that incorporates every single color of Jello except the chocolate pudding. Also, there were giant clams the size of people. The dive instructors did a demonstration of putting their hand into the clam and watching it try to snap shut. That was fun to watch. Generally a very nice day, hanging out with some fun Canadians and my Danish roommate from the hostel. The only disappointing thing is that Queensland has the strictest medical restrictions for diving, and my asthma prevented me from even suiting up. But most everything to see was at the surface, and I had a great time snorkeling, so I'm still pleased.
Tonight I'm back in Sydney and staying in King's Cross before flying to Dubai tomorrow night. It's the seedy section of Sydney - the red light district. But it's also the backpacker's district with everything open all night and tons of bars. The sandwich/salad place I just ate at is even open 24/7. Imagine being drunk at 3AM and getting couscous and Greek salad! Ah, being drunk and healthy. Oh, and I just discovered that mixed in among the prostitutes and XXX video and Live Girls!!! joints, there was a lingerie shop playing Queen's "Fat-Bottomed Girls". Must do wonders for sales, huh?
